The Catholic Diocese of Kakamega today celebrated a significant milestone as Emeritus Bishop Philip Sulumeti led the Silver Jubilee celebrations for Brother Kizito Shitsukane, the Superior of the St. Charles Lwanga Region. The event, marking 25 years of dedicated religious service, was held on behalf of Bishop Joseph Obanyi, who was attending to other church duties.
In the Catholic tradition, a Silver Jubilee represents hope, perseverance, dedication, and spiritual renewal. The symbolic use of silver signifies purity and reconciliation, offering the faithful an opportunity to receive a plenary indulgence. Bishop Sulumeti expressed deep appreciation for Brother Kizito’s service, stating, “I send you love from the depths of my heart as memories of your kindness and goodness fill my thoughts. We celebrate your unwavering service, and I extend my warmest congratulations.”

Brother Kizito acknowledged the strong partnerships with sister institutions such as St. Charles Lwanga, Ruai-Nairobi, and St. Stephen’s Kimaet-Bungoma, commending them for their spiritual support and collaborative efforts. He also praised St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School – Mukumu, the mother school, for playing a pivotal role in nurturing Catholic Brothers and catechists who serve the community.
The school, known for its academic and co-curricular excellence, is one of the 157 Catholic Diocese of Kakamega-sponsored institutions. It has established itself as a leading educational center, consistently ranking among the top 10 Catholic schools in the region. Beyond academics, the school has made a name for itself in sports, having recently won the sub-county soccer championship, defeating Mukumu Boys in a competitive match.
Privately sponsored by the Brothers of St. Charles Lwanga, a congregation with roots in Uganda, the school is founded on strong Catholic doctrines. With the motto “Education for the Greater Glory of God,” it nurtures students into holistic individuals who uphold values such as respect, honesty, integrity, responsibility, love, and teamwork.

Since January 2023, Principal Brother Wesonga Christopher has been at the helm of the institution, driving improvements in academic performance and sports development. The school has produced notable figures, including Archbishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba, the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kisumu. Brother Wesonga emphasized the school’s commitment to spiritual and moral development, highlighting that daily Masses and a strong guidance and counseling team have played a vital role in upholding discipline both in school and within the broader community.
The school attracts students from across East Africa, including Tanzania, South Sudan, Sudan, and various regions within Kenya, such as Mombasa, North Eastern, and Kajiado. With the introduction of junior secondary facilities, the school has begun admitting students into Grades 8 and 9, and parents are encouraged to enroll their children due to the safe learning environment, balanced diet, and sufficient infrastructure capable of accommodating over 1,000 students.

One of the school’s strategies for academic success is early syllabus completion by June, allowing students ample time to revise, research, and gain in-depth subject knowledge. In addition to the standard curriculum, the school also provides catechism lessons and baptism opportunities for students, fostering a strong spiritual foundation. Annually, on June 3rd, the institution celebrates St. Charles Lwanga Day, contributing to a special school development project as part of its tradition.
The school has made impressive strides in academic performance, with Deputy Principal Mr. Leakey Muliande reporting an improved KCSE mean score of 6.061 in 2024, reflecting an upward trend from 4.92 in 2023. With 250 students taught by 19 qualified teachers, the school saw 20 out of 60 students in the previous cohort secure university placements. The 2025 KCSE class, consisting of 75 candidates, is determined to surpass previous achievements, with expectations of continued academic growth.
Admissions remain open for students in Forms 2, 3, and a select few in Form 4, with the administration committed to providing quality education rooted in faith and discipline. Discipline at St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School – Mukumu is firmly anchored in Christian values, reinforced through motivational speakers and the presence of Catholic Brothers, who serve as role models for students.

With a strong foundation in faith, academics, and character formation, St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School – Mukumu continues to produce well-rounded young men, prepared to make meaningful contributions to society. As Brother Kizito Shitsukane celebrates 25 years of dedicated service, the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega reaffirms its commitment to nurturing future leaders through education, spiritual guidance, and moral development.
