Governor Fernandes Barasa has reassured Kakamega residents that his administration remains committed to supporting technical education despite financial hurdles facing county governments. Speaking at his home in Harambee, Kholera Ward, Matungu Constituency, during a memorial service for his late mother, Mama Philomena Mutelwa Barasa, the governor emphasized the importance of equipping youth with skills that can drive economic development.
He noted that despite the ongoing standoff between the Council of Governors (CoG) and the Office of the Controller of Budget (OCOB) over the disbursement of bursary funds, Kakamega County will continue to finance students enrolled in county polytechnics. Additionally, he assured that his administration will ensure all eligible trainees are registered for National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) and Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) certification.
Governor Barasa highlighted that polytechnic education plays a crucial role in bridging the skills gap, reducing unemployment, and fostering self-reliance among the youth. He urged parents to encourage their children to take advantage of the county’s investment in vocational training, noting that industries increasingly seek skilled artisans in fields such as construction, plumbing, electrical installation, and automotive technology.
The governor also reaffirmed his broader vision for education in Kakamega, citing ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure in vocational training centers and enhance collaboration with industry stakeholders to create job opportunities for graduates.
