St. Teresa’s Bumini Secondary School, Shianda is gearing up to create a mark for itself as an academic powerhouse.
Senior Principal Dorice Akinyi Onyango said as part of their preparation toward attaining good results in 2025 KCSE, the school is glazing all their guns to complete the syllabus by May to create time for ample revision and consultation.
“We’ve also changed the timetable to ensure lessons start at 7 a.m and end at 6 p.m. This creates extra time for teacher-student contact time,” she said, adding that on a fortnight basis, the candidates do exams which is marked and revision done to work on students’ weak areas.
She also added that every lunch hour on a daily basis, students have time to consult teachers. The move has improved the relationship between the two parties and psyched them up more towards attaining the set mean score of 6.1.
“In last year’s exams, 41 students qualified for direct university admission. The current 285 candidates are psyched up to even do better,” she noted, adding with pride that the students are highly disciplined: movement in the school is by running, and communication is done in English.

The Catholic Diocese of Kakamega sponsored school performs well in the Catholic schools’ joint exams and always ranks among top 30 out of 157 schools. They have benchmarking sessions with neighbouring schools like Ebusia Secondary, Shitoto Girls, and Lubinu Boys, which helps students exchange ideas on best performance practices.
Due to its motto on hard work and discipline, the school has attracted a good number of students, making it the most populated day school in Mumias East sub-county. The mixed day school has a student population of 920, and is registered as a 5 stream public school. It is located in Mumias East constituency, and has 22 teachers employed by TSC and 10 employed by the BoM.
Mrs Onyango added that the school gives cash rewards to the best performing students, and teachers whose subjects have performed well to motivate the others to aim for excellence.
“St. Teresa’s Bumini Secondary School, Shianda is the place to be. It has beautiful infrastructure and a signage strategically placed in all corners by the MasterCard. The school is also easily accessible since it’s adjacent to Kakamega -Mumias highway near Shianda town,” she noted with pride.

She thanked the area member of parliament Hon Peter Salasya, through the NG-CDF, for improving the aesthetics of the school, and creating an ambient environment conducive for learning.
“Through the NG-CDF, the MP has put up the state of the art administration block, which will house all offices upon completion. He also supports many students with bursaries, since most of them come from humble backgrounds,” she explained.
She said she has a class for perfection and performance is her slogan. Having served as a principal for over 17 years, her vast experience is a sign of great achievements attained through discipline as well as elaborate academic programs.
The senior principal leads by example. She is always in school to perform administrative duties and teach Geography, whose performance is very good based on the results from past exams.
As a mother figure, she has revolutionized the school to an all-round learning institution aiming to be recognized as a centre of excellence. She wholeheartedly supports students’ engagement in extra-curricular activities like hockey, soccer, legball and drama which reached the nationals.

Mrs Onyango added that she has a vibrant and able BoM team that fully supports the school’s programs.
Deputy principal Judith Segero Masakha said that the principal has an open way of administration. She has a listening ear and is a pro-active administrator on matters concerning academic growth.
” We have a God sent principal who supports learning. She is a disciplinarian teacher and has open policies that place us in safe hands,” revealed the deputy.
She added that the school has a cordial relationship with the parents and entire community, making it easier to run the school. She applauded the teaching staff for exercising team work and hard work to ensure students excel.

She requested TSC to deploy more teachers to the school since they have only 22 teachers yet the CBE requirements dictate that the number should be 48.
