Candidates ready for KCSE
In preparation for good results in 2025 KCSE, the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega-Lusumu parish sponsored school is almost through with syllabus coverage, giving students ample time for revision.
The principal Joseph Buluma, a disciplinarian and a humble and open-minded administrator, has served as a principal in various schools for over 12 years. He was the pioneer principal at St. Luke’s Shanderema for 7 years before being transferred to Matisi Secondary School in Trans-Nzoia county. Due to his experience, he has instilled discipline and perfection in academic matters as he doesn’t tolerate complacency when it comes to learning.
He shared that they are working on rapid results initiatives which should be followed to the latter. He further revealed that for 2025 KCSE, the school has registered 103 candidates, who have a slogan of “the sky is the beginning of the limit.”
“All stakeholders are working tirelessly hard to ensure we surpass our target of 6.0. We have implemented robust academic programmes, with learning starting very early in the morning and ending late in the evening,” explained the principal, stating further that he is sourcing for revision materials across the country and downloading past KCSE papers for use to equip students with knowledge on how to tackle national exam questions.
He added: “I am ready to strengthen the students’ welfare department and partner with the BoM to achieve financial stability for this institution as well as improve its academics.”

key areas for concern

He categorically stated that such moves saw them record an improved mean score of 5.2027 in 2024 KCSE with a positive deviation of 0.2107 from 4.992 recorded in the 2023 KCSE results.
“The class is focused and above average. They are also highly disciplined, a virtue that makes it easier for the teachers to go above and beyond to ensure the students produce good results. We are optimistic that good results are on the way,” he stated.
He revealed that they do joint exams, symposia and academic contests in the sub-county and always perform well, something that motivates them to rally and trans-night towards excellence in national examinations. The language teachers also organize for the students to watch plays based on set books, which helps the students to internalize the concepts of literature and prepare them for the contemporary aspects in KCSE.
To encourage good performance, teachers are motivated through capacity building programmes and being given meals during extra -learning hours . Students have not been left behind. The top performers are sponsored for academic trips across the country to visit established universities. Their sumptuous meals are also balanced diets. Student leaders are given blazers and badges for free a gesture to thank them for their good work.
Speaking to Education Hotspot News, the principal shared that he has plans that will ensure he improves the school and leaves it better than he found it.

Refurbishment on infrastructure and MP’S blueprint for the school
For example, on infrastructural development, he has started the process of renovating the science laboratory. He is also in consultation with Navakholo constituency MP Hon. Emmanuel Wangwe to put up a state-of-the-art modern tuition block which will suit the implementation of the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC).
The principal thanked the area MP for the unwavering support he has accorded the school, and urged him to support other infrastructural construction as well to better the future of students in the constituency.
St. Kizito’s Lusumu Secondary School has a student population of 348 guided by 19 TSC teachers and 4 employed on BoM, a figure below the recommended curriculum based establishment (CBE) requirements of 29 teachers.
Mr Buluma stated that he is in constant talks with TSC to increase the number of teachers at the school. He revealed that the school has never benefitted from the Ministry of Education and the government’s T.I.G grants.
“We’re in a tough spot as we’ve received circulars from the Ministry asking us to improve infrastructure in schools in readiness for CBC students yet our school doesn’t even have a single CBC class. How will the program be carried out?” He posed.
Journalism club out to educate, enlighten and entertain others
