This year Brookside Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) term one national games officially began yesterday at Shanzu Teachers College and Shimo la Tewa High School in Mombasa.

The next five days will interact with more than 2000 students from eight regions across the country  who will battle for the highly coveted national honors with an aim to qualify for East Africa Secondary School Games scheduled in August,Huye-Rwanda.

Disciplines include basketball, hockey, rugby 15s, swimming, handball, athletics and cross country. Rugby 15s, handball and basketball matches are set to take place at Shimo la Tewa while Shanzu Teachers College will host hockey, select handball fixtures and athletics. Swimming events on the other hand will be held at the Agakhan Academy.

Title holders like Dr Aggrey High School (Basketball), Butere Girls (Basketball), All Saints Embu High School (Rugby 15s), Moi Girls Kamusinga (Handball), Kimilili Boys (Handball), Tigoi Girls (Hockey) and Musing’u Boys (Hockey) will be looking forward to defending their titles.

In the hockey competitions, the pools have been drawn as follows.

Pool A: Nairobi’s Hospital Hill, Nyanza’s Ringa Boys, Rift Valley’s St. Anthony’s and Coast’s St. Charles

Pool B: Western’s Musingu, Central’s MPESA Foundation, Eastern’s Matiliku Boys and Coast’s Mnyenzeni.

Girls’ hockey:

Pool A: Coast’s St. Charles, Eastern’s AIC Nyayo, Rift Valley’s St. Joseph’s Girls and Nairobi’s Mwiki’s Girls.

The pools for Rugby’s 15s are as follows.

Pool A: Coast’s Serani Boys, Nairobi’s Upper Hill, Eastern’s All Saints and Central’s Mang’u High

Pool B: Coast’s Marafa Secondary, Western’s Vihiga Boys, Rift Valley’s Bwake Boys and Nyanza’s Kisii Boys.

Basketball pools include:

Pool A: Dr. Aggrey (Coast), Pioneer School (Central), Dagoretti High (Nairobi) and Friends School Kamusinga (Western)

Pool B: Lukenya School (Eastern), Laiser Hill (Rift Valley) and Sawagongo Boys (Nyanza)

Basketball Girls:

Pool A: Ikutha Girls (Eastern), Kaya Tiwi (Coast) and Olympic Secondary School

Pool B: Mpesa Academy (Central), Asumbi Girls (Nyanza), St Joseph’s Girls Kitale (Rift Valley) and Butere Girls (Western)

Handball boys:

Pool A: Manyatta Boys (Nyanza), Highway Secondary School (Nairobi) and Matiliku Boys (Eastern)

Pool B: St. Luke’s Kimilili Boys (Western), Makuyu Boys (Central), Jaribuni Secondary (Coast) and St. Albert Kamito (Rift Valley)

Handball Girls:

Pool A: Moi Girls Kamusinga (Western), Kyeni Girls (Eastern) and Dagoretti Mixed (Nairobi)

Pool B: Thika Girls Karibaribi (Central), Kadika (Nyanza) and St Charles Lwanga (Coast)

The KSSSA National Term One Games are crucial for developing and nurturing young athletic talent in Kenya, with many of the county’s top sports personalities having emerged from these competitions.

KSSSA Secretary General David Ngugi highlighted the role these games play in the nurturing of talents and thanked sponsors like Brookside for their support. “As the games progress, the spirit of competition and sportsmanship remains at the forefront, promising a memorable experience for all participants and spectators.” implied Ngugi.
