Principals and educators from all over the country are set to have a meeting ahead of the preparations being made for the transition of grade nine students to grade ten. The meeting will be a significant step in ensuring that schools are adequately prepared to transition and implement the new educational framework.
The competency-based curriculum was designed to address the needs of the learners and instill skills such as creativity, collaboration and communication.
This is a different approach as compared to the 8-4-4 system which focused mainly on exams and students’ academic performance. As school heads prepare for the meeting, its main agenda will revolve around the resources, strategies and support systems needed for effective CBC implementation.
Among the salient issues will be the professional development of teachers. Teachers are expected to undergo rigorous training in view of the new curriculum so as to be fully equipped to handle the students who will be transiting to senior secondary school.
Another area will be reviewing the infrastructure and learning materials that are needed for CBC which introduces new methods of learning such as practical projects, presentations and portfolio that require different tools.
Additionally, the meeting’s focus is the involvement of parents and educators. Schools will need to collaborate with parents and the community as a whole to ensure the success of the curriculum, whereas parents will be required to take fully charge of their children’s learning.
Challenges that may come up during the transition will be discussed at length especially resource allocation, teacher preparedness and students’ adaptation.
Finally, the meeting will stress on the importance of inclusivity in the CBC framework. The curriculum is designed to be flexible and cater for the needs of everyone including those with special needs.
School heads will discuss how to ensure that every student has access to quality education and opportunities to thrive under the competency-based curriculum.
The meeting will serve as a pivotal moment in ensuring that schools are adequately prepared for CBC implementation.
By addressing teachers’ training, involvement of parents, Inclusivity and resource allocation. School heads will play a crucial role in shaping the future of education and ensuring that CBC delivers its promise of empowering students to become well-rounded, competent individuals.
