It was a day of raw talent, spirited chants, and teenage dreams as the 2025 Kakamega County Secondary School Games officially got underway. The soccer fields of Mumias came alive with the sounds of whistles, cheers, and the unmistakable thud of ball against boot , a true festival of football.
In the boys’ category, traditional heavyweights wasted no time stamping their authority.
Butere Boys were ruthless in their opener, putting four past a struggling Ingotse Boys side in a match that was one way traffic from the first whistle. They followed it up with a narrow but vital 1-0 win over Mapera Secondary, showing they can grind out results when needed.
Over at Mumias Complex, Musingu High School made light work of Mwitoti Secondary, cruising to a 2-0 win in a game they controlled from start to finish. Their midfield, calm and calculating, dictated play and gave spectators a glimpse of what could be a serious title run.
Kakamega High School the Green Commandos were clinical against Munyuki, walking away 2-0 winners in a performance that mixed discipline with individual brilliance. They never looked troubled.
Shamberere Boys also enjoyed a bright start, brushing aside Marukusi Secondary 2-0. But they’ll face a tougher test tomorrow when they meet Muslim’s Boys, who themselves edged Marukusi 1-0 in a cagey contest.
If fans were looking for drama, they got it at Muslim Boys Grounds, where Shanderema Boys and Ingotse Boys shared six goals in an electric 3-3 draw, a match full of comebacks, missed chances, and moments of magic.
St. Peter’s Mumias Boys gave their home crowd plenty to cheer about with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Mwira Secondary, while Munyuki earlier had beaten Mwihila Secondary 2-0 before falling to Kakamega High.
In the girls’ competition, Butere Girls reminded everyone why they’re among the most feared sides in the County. With back to back 2-0 wins over Kimang’eti Girls and Mwitoti, they barely broke a sweat, their pace and coordination too much for their opponents.
Archbishop Njenga Girls were made to work for their 3-2 win against Musoli, while Ahong’injo Girls secured a slender but important 1-0 victory over Lwandeti DEB.
As the sun set and boots were hung up for the day, attention quickly shifted to tomorrow’s fixtures. Three key matches Shamberere vs Muslim’s Boys, St. Peter’s Mumias, and Musingu High were rescheduled to continue tomorrow at Muslim’s Grounds and Mumias Complex.
If today’s action is anything to go by, this year’s edition promises to be among the most competitive in recent memory. The fire has been lit. The race for Kakamega glory is well and truly on.
