Eregi Teachers Training College, located in Ikolomani Constituency, Kakamega County, is on course to being accredited as a constituent college of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).

Established in the early 20th century, Eregi TTC has long been a respected institution in Kenya’s teacher training landscape. It has played a critical role in shaping the country’s education sector, having trained thousands of primary and secondary school teachers over the decades. The college’s elevation aligns with the government’s broader agenda to enhance tertiary education infrastructure and adapt teacher training to meet modern demands, including the shift toward degree-level qualifications under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

During a recent visit to the college, Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, and Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa announced that Eregi will begin offering certificate, diploma, and degree programs—a significant expansion from its previous offerings limited to certificate and diploma courses.

Dr. Inyangala, who inspected the institution’s readiness ahead of its anticipated opening in September, expressed satisfaction with the progress.

“We conducted a thorough inspection of the college and we are satisfied with the level of preparedness,” she stated.

MMUST Vice-Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo echoed his sentiments, noting that the transformation is a major milestone for the university.

“This is a big score for Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. We are committed to delivering high-quality programs at Eregi, including courses in Education, Sciences, and Humanities,” he said.

He also urged the institution to prioritize admission for students from Ikolomani and its neighboring communities, adding that the expansion will help decongest MMUST’s main campus.

Local leaders and stakeholders have welcomed the integration, citing anticipated benefits such as improved infrastructure, enhanced faculty recruitment, and expanded research capacity. Additionally, the transformation is expected to drive regional economic growth through increased investment in housing, retail, and other services supporting the university community.

All academic programs at Eregi will initially operate under the supervision of MMUST, with the long-term vision of achieving full accreditation as an independent campus.

The transition of Eregi TTC into a constituent college of MMUST represents a bold step toward modernizing teacher education in Kenya. It reflects a national commitment to academic excellence, professional advancement, and equitable regional development—offering a promising future for education in Western Kenya.
