A highly anticipated boys’ football final between Shanderema Boys and Mukumu Boys was abruptly abandoned on Sunday afternoon at Solyo Grounds amid growing concerns over crowd control and escalating tension.
The match, widely billed as the Isukha Derby due to the historic rivalry between the two institutions, had drawn an enthusiastic and sizable crowd from across the region. With the score level at 1–1 early in the second half, match officials made the decision to call off the game, citing precautionary security concerns compounded by heavy rains that made playing conditions difficult.
Shanderema Boys had taken an early lead in the 14th minute, only for Mukumu Boys to equalize before the halftime break. Despite no physical altercations at the time of the stoppage, officials noted that the charged atmosphere, both on the pitch and in the stands, presented a potential risk of unrest.
The fixture will be replayed at a later date under improved security arrangements and more favourable weather conditions, according to the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Sub County Games committee.
Meanwhile, in the girls’ category, St. Agnes Girls Shibuye delivered a resolute performance to edge out Magata Mixed Secondary School 1–0, securing their place in the upcoming county finals. The victory further strengthens Shibuye’s status as a rising force in school football.
These matches are part of the ongoing KSSSA Sub County Games, which act as a qualifying platform for the county, regional, and national school championships. The county finals are scheduled for Mumias Sports Complex, with National and East African (FEASSSA) School Games slated for later this year at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.
Kakamega’s successful bid to host the prestigious tournaments follows a high level strategic meeting between Governor Fernandes Barasa and KSSSA officials aimed at aligning infrastructure and logistics for the upcoming national events.
Addressing the crowd at Solyo Grounds, Mr. Emmanuel Makokha, Youth Advisor in the Office of the Governor, reaffirmed the county’s preparedness and commitment.
“Kakamega is ready to host both the National and East African school games,” Mr. Makokha stated. “Governor Barasa has prioritized investment in sports infrastructure, and renovation works at Bukhungu Stadium are progressing well ahead of schedule.”
Mr. Makokha, who also presided over the awards ceremony on behalf of the governor, commended the teams for their discipline and sportsmanship. He reiterated the county government’s commitment to empowering young people through structured sports development programs.
With Kakamega County poised to take center stage in the national school sports calendar, attention now turns to the rescheduled boys’ final and the county level showdowns that will determine who advances to the regional and national championships.
