Kenya Primary Schools Headteachers’ Association (KEPSHA) National Chairman Johnson Matheka Nzioka has passed away in a tragic road accident. Mr Nzioka’s vehicle collided with a truck in Athi River along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
Until his demise, Mr Nzioka served as a headteacher at Donholm Primary School. He also served as KEPSHA chairperson where he led over 24,000 primary school heads and more than eight million learners across the country. At the helm of the teachers’ union body, he advocated for adequate funding in schools, better school management and the welfare of school heads.
He had previously served as the sub county chairman of the Kenya Primary School Sports Association before taking over as the vice chairperson. In addition, he also served as the organizing secretary of the Federation of East African Primary Schools Headteachers.
Many have described him as a visionary leader, a mentor and selfless advocate for teachers and learners, highlighting his abilities to listen, unite and inspire those around him.
President William Ruto described him as a visionary individual who devoted his time to mentoring and grooming upright and industrious students.
“Our prayers are with his family and the KEPSHA fraternity,” the president said.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos noted that at the helm of KEPSHA, Mr. Nzioka aimed to strengthen the role of school heads for better educational outcomes.
Teachers Service Commission Chairperson Dr. Nancy Macharia stated that Kenya has lost one of its most gallant academics who will be greatly missed by the teaching fraternity and the entire education sector. She noted that his commitment to service saw him rise fast to leadership.
KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu eulogized the deceased as a leader with diplomatic skills, who had been a regular contributor for the welfare of teachers.
